On this page we have items for sale in sets or as single pieces; please feel free to contact us to negotiate shipping rates for items. Local delivery in some states available by truck (blanket wrapped).
While by rights Monterey furniture was made by the Mason Manufacturing company, as a genre over time other companies (Angeles Furniture Company (called Coronado), Del Rey, Karpen, Brown and Saltman, Imperial) have come to be known by this as a genre.
Each relied on Spanish, Dutch Colonial, and California Mission architecture for inspiration. Cowboy and ranch accoutrements influenced their embellishments: horse shoes, lariats and branding irons. Together they created the Rancho California style.
- All items in original state unless otherwise noted, though we may have waxed or cleaned them.
- If the pieces are from an estate or organization then we will disclose this, and in that case we represent the family as we have bought the items from them or they are on consignment.
- We can reupholster pieces if desired, example shown above right and can be seen on this page.
- Shipping or delivery will be determined when order is discussed. Items might have to be crated for some types of shipping, or if fairly close to Oregon or a large order blanket wrapped and truck deliveries available.
- At this time USA contiguous states only.
We will be explicit in telling you which manufacturer each piece was created by; below the pieces for sale are divided into manufacturer.
We are experts with several decades of experience in the restoration of all types of Monterey. Visit these pages if you love Monterey, from the NPS we have pages on the restoration of their items: Oregon Caves for Mason Monterey, Crater Lake for Imperial “Monterey”.
This page is continually updating with new items;
please excuse messy changes or missing links!!

MASON MONTEREY
All items in this area were made by the Mason Manufacturing in Los Angeles, California, USA, circa 1930-1935. The company was started by Frank Mason. It is said that all pieces were made from alder wood, but we have found that they were made from a variety of woods. All were hand painted in oil paints in the shop in downtown Los Angeles.

OLD WOOD PADDLE-ARM SOFA AND CHAIR
This set is from the Frank Crowe estate (see bio at bottom of page in notes).
Will sell together or separately, with original fabric in poor condition. Happy to offer reupholstery services. Finish is in good condition for normal wear. Monterey table not included.

Below are images of the sofa and chair, original springs in excellent condition.
Dimensions Sofa: Approximately 36″ x 70″, $1950 as is.
Dimensions Chair: Approximately 24″ W x 36″ D, $1050 as is.

OLD WOOD SIDE TABLE
This sweet Mason Monterey Old Wood Side Table has one beautiful California tile at the center. Straw Yellow decorative balls on the legs. No restoration work performed by us. $950
Dimensions 23.5″ across x 27.5″ high.

SMOKEY MAPLE DROP LEAF DESK

This is a beautiful Smokey Maple Drop Leaf Desk with a Straw Yellow floral pattern on the front of the closed top.
This came to us in good condition but for the Straw Yellow back panel, shown right, which was damaged from an overhead leak. We are in the process of restoring.
Dimensions:
35″ W x 18″ D x 75″ Tall.
We will price it for sale when completed, but if you are interested please contact Kate at dkatiepowell@aol.com.

SMOKEY MAPLE FOUR SEAT SOFA
This long four-seat sofa is hard to find, and we believe this is a later model. Excellent painted condition, and the cushion interiors are also in good condition.
The showcover fabric is lovely but has issues, however, we can preserve the original fabric FOR LIGHT USE. What we mean by this is it can’t be a party sofa, used roughly, but if it is in a room with light or civilized usage then we can stand behind preservation. We would have to make new matching welt cords, and the showcover would be cleaned and repaired. If you need to discuss our expertise in this area just ask.
Or, we are happy to reupholster the piece for you.
Amazing Nachman Crown Last Spring-filled cushions with cotton batting surrounds and sisal spring wrapped cores are a wonderful “sit” and if you purchase this with some other upholsterer doing the work for you do not let them convince you to toss the innards. These are superior.
Missing buttons, but we can replace with historic buttons.
Dimensions are approximately 36″ D x 94″ W. As is, $4000.

NOT MONTEREY SPOON REST
Okay, this is NOT Monterey, but we decided to refinish Kate’s family heirloom to match Spanish Red, thinking someone might enjoy it if they have Monterey in their kitchens!

DEL REY
Del Rey was one of the many companies that jumped on the Monterey craze in the thirties. Right is a set listed below, one of our favorites and one I’ve not wanted to part with.
Del Rey had colors similar to Mason, and so we have loosely called some by those names.
Below, two posts on the restoration of this set.

DEL REY “STRAW IVORY” TABLE AND FOUR CHAIRS
This Del Rey “Straw Ivory” Table/Chairs set would make a great set for a small dining room, apartment, or kitchen. Sold separately from the hutch, but will discount if the entire set is purchased. $3400

Chair seat dimensions are roughly 15.5″ “square”.

NOT MONTEREY SPOON REST
Okay, this is NOT Monterey, but we decided to refinish Kate’s family heirloom to match Spanish Red, thinking someone might enjoy it if they have Monterey in their kitchens!

Notes:

If you have bought on of Frank Crowe’s pieces, we will offer a certificate of authenticity that this is part of the historic collection discussed below.
Bio of Frank Crowe:
Francis Trenholm Crowe (October 12, 1882 – February 26, 1946) was the chief engineer of the Hoover Dam. Born in Trenholmville, Quebec, Crowe attended the Governor Drummer Academy, matriculating to the University of Maine where he graduated in 1905 with a degree in civil engineering. The University’s Francis Crowe Society is named in his honor. Crowe became interested in the American west during a lecture from Frank Weymouth, a guest speaker from the US Bureau of Reclamation. He signed up for a summer job before the end of the lecture. That summer job began a 20 year career with the reclamation service that would change the face of the American west. In 1924, Frank Crowe left the United States Bureau of Reclamation to join the construction firm of Morrison Knudsen in Idaho. Morrison-Knudsen had recently signed a partnership with the larger Utah Construction Company to build dams.
Crowe pioneered two practices that are crucial to the construction of large dams. The first was a pneumatic delivery system to transport concrete and the second was a system of overhead cables to allow the pneumatic concrete to be pumped at any point on the construction site. With this technique, Crowe built some of the largest dams in the American west, including Hoover Dam, Parker Dam (155 miles (249 km) downstream from Hoover); Copper Basin and Gene Wash Dams on the Colorado Aqueduct system; and Shasta Dam in Northern California. All these dams were important but none approached the mythic scale or mystique of Hoover Dam. He retired in 1944 to his 20,000-acre (81 km2) cattle ranch near Redding, California, where he died of a heart attack on February 26, 1946. The furniture was part of this estate, some of which was lost in a fire. It has lived with the family intact.
